THE ESSENTIAL VITAMIN
NO LONGER IN OUR DIET
YET
IS CRUCIAL FOR
BONE & HEART HEALTH

Vitamin D and Calcium are well known ingredients for bone health, but now researchers have found there is another essential nutrient for bone health that unfortunately, is no longer available in our diets... vitamin K2. This vitamin is essential for bone strength as it’s responsible for binding calcium to our bones and teeth, and more importantly, K2 is critical for keeping calcium out of arteries. Researchers have discovered that vitamin K2 works with calcium and vitamin D, and is essential in the fight against the most common and devastating diseases of our time: osteoporosis and coronary heart disease, however due to changes in our agriculture and food manufacturing, K2 is rarely available through our diet and so supplementation is essential.

Due to enormous changes in farming practices (grass fed to grain fed / pasture raised to feedlots) K2 is no longer available in common foods such as butter, eggs, cheese and meat from animals that are grain fed.  The significance of these changes to our diets is only now being understood.  It is important to note that the human body can only convert a very small amount of K1 to K2 through gut bacteria, not enough for health benefits.

Armed with this new research, Nature’s Way created a unique formulation containing a therapeutic dose of each of these essential bone building and artery clearing nutrients, into one powerful capsule;
Calcium: is critical for bone and teeth health as it supports their structure & hardness.
Vitamin D: promotes calcium absorption from the intestines and allows for proper function of the parathyroid hormone to maintain blood calcium levels.
Vitamin K2: activates a certain proteins that guide calcium into bones and teeth where it belongs; and activates other proteins that escort calcium out of soft tissues such as arteries.

Dr Claudia Lee, an Integrative General Practitioner at UClinic Sydney  has reviewed the recent clinical study on K2 and agrees on the importance Vitamin K2 for our health “Latest research1 on Vitamin K2 has shown that it binds necessary calcium to the bone mineral matrix, and prevents it from depositing in the arteries.  Based on these discoveries it is reasonable to suggest that as Australians we would need to increase our consumption of foods containing K2 [if possible] or consider supplementation to improve our intake of this important vitamin.”

In Australia, two in three women, and one in three men over the age of 60 will suffer an osteoporotic fracture in their remaining lifetime. Currently over 2.2 million Australians are affected by the disease.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) or heart disease claimed the lives of 20,046 Australians (13% of  deaths) in 2012.  CHD kills 55 Australians each day, or one Australian every 26 minutes.

Although vitamin K2 has been recognised as an essential vitamin for many years, it has only been recently that the Australian TGA has made it available as a supplement for Australian consumers.

Dennis Goodman, MD, is Director of Integrative Medicine at New York University where he also serves as Clinical Associate Professor and Cardiologist in the Department of Cardiology and Preventative Medicine says “I believe there is now enough scientific evidence to make you notice and add it [K2] to you list of essential nutrients” he continues to say “Taking calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K2 and magnesium are important to reduce the risk of osteoporosis and to improve cardiovascular health.” Dr Goodman is also the author of Vitamin K2, The Missing Nutrient for Heart & Bone Health.  He identifies that due to the change in farming practices that “the best way to get K2 is through supplementation”.

Professor Cees Vermeer from Maastricht University has been lauded for his pioneering work in elucidating vitamin K and vitamin K2, its structure, its nature and its benefits in human health, a specialty of his since 1975. As such, he is considered the world's leading expert on this vitamin, and remains a proponent of the inclusion of vitamin K2 in the diets of people of all ages, worldwide.  Dr. Vermeer led the research team of the groundbreaking three-year study that demonstrated that a daily dose of 180mcg of vitamin K2 menaquinone-7 increased bone strength and density in 244 post-menopausal women, as well as preventing age-related arterial stiffening. This study was recently published in Osteoporosis International (M.H.J. Knapen et al, ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23525894 ).
