Giant Frying Pan Cooks up Sun Safe Message at Tamarama Beach
A giant frying pan at the Sculpture by the Sea Exhibition on Tamarama beach is striking chords with the reality of the dangers spending a day unprotected in the sun can have on our health.
Sydney Artist Andrew Hankin, in partnership with SunSense, has installed the sculpture, aptly named ‘We’re Fryin’ Out Here’ which asks beachgoers to stop and think about the damaging effects of the sun.
Hankin says the idea came to mind after he noticed how many friends go to the beach to ‘cook’ themselves.
“I wanted to create a sculpture with a message and saw this as an opportunity to raise awareness about the effects the sun has on our skin” Hankin added.
Not only does the sculpture stand to remind beach goers of the scalding burns that can result from a day
unprotected from the sun at the beach, but it also acts as a reminder of the long term health risks.
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world.
Hankin says having the support of a quality Australian sunscreen brand like SunSense is a natural fit and integral to getting the message across.
“It’s incredibly important to have the support of SunSense to bring this message to life. SunSense believe strongly in the importance of sun protection and all their sunscreens are Australian made and owned. There’s no brand we’d rather have on board because the message behind the sculpture and the philosophy of SunSense are so well linked” Hankin said.
The larger than life sculpture has a 9m long handle that weighs 1.8 tonnes. The radius of the pan is 14m.
“I really wanted to create something that would stick in people’s minds long after the exhibition is gone. I hope the name and more importantly the message behind the sculpture will have that affect” Hankin said.
2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70 and around 2,000 Australian’s die from skin cancer each year.
SunSense will have a team on site handing out sunscreen to visitors of Sculpture by the Sea on Saturday 1st November and Saturday 8th November.
