Bill Tskinaris, QLD Hairdresser of the Year and Director of Tsiknaris Hair in New Farm, has reviewed the Spring Summer 2013 trends from the recent International runway shows and has pulled together some easy how to steps to create the looks at home without the backstage experts:
-To part in the middle or on the side?
-Perfecting the top knot or chignon
-Creating effortless waves

The Centre & Side Part:

“Deciding where to part your hair depends on your face shape. Generally people will go with their natural part and stick with it for years. But there are a few simple rules to follow in choosing where to part your hair depending on your face shape,” Bill said.
Heart-Shaped: Heart-shaped faces tend to be wider in the cheeks so a middle part complements this shape, but only if you have long hair. A side part will also work by allowing hair to cover the larger forehead and cheek area and make the face look thinner.
Square: A deep side part will soften the forehead and jaw line. The long layers create a rounded oval by falling diagonally across the face and hiding harsher angles.
Oval: People with oval faces have it the easiest! They can pull off any part, any side, any way, on any style.
Round: Use a deep side part to showcase your strongest side. Round faces need a curtain of hair to lengthen the shape and balance the features.

Step 1: Prep
Every hairstyle needs a good foundation to create texture & hold so using the right products at the start is very important. Apply Alterna Bamboo 48-hour Sustainable Volume Spray or Weightless Whipped Mousse to give your follicles a little extra texture, which plump after heat styling. Begin by distributing the product at the roots, gradually working your way to the ends.

Step 2: Blow
When your locks are ready for styling, arm yourself with the right tools for height. A round brush really gives fine hair maximum volume. As you dry your hair, work the nozzle of the blow-dryer into your roots and push up as this trains your hair to retain lifted shape at the crown.

Step 3: Tease
Teasing had a major hair moment back in the '70s and '80s, but there's a way to harness the technique without turning into Snooki! With a small backcombing brush, separate a couple of one-inch sections from the sides and back of your head, then tease a couple of times, staying close to the root. After, smooth the sections with your fingers or a paddle brush, and spray with some Alterna Caviar Working Hairspray to lock in the volume and texture.

The Chignon/Knot
“Knowing how to create the perfect runway knot is a must if you want a style that is glamorous and effortless at the same time. It is also the perfect up-do if you are running late and haven’t had time to wash and blow-dry your hair,” Bill said.

Step 1: Brush
Begin by brushing to smooth and detangle the hair. While it seems obvious, this step is too often overlooked, resulting in those ever-frustrating bumps in your ponytail or updo. Try using a paddle brush with boar bristles. Brush your hair away from your face into a ponytail. Wrap a coated elastic band around your hair.

Step 2: Twist
Twist the hair of your ponytail from the elastic band to the ends. If your hair is layered or prone to frizzes and flyaways, apply a few drops of Alterna Caviar Shine Serum to your hands before twisting to keep your hair smooth.

Step 3: Wrap
Carefully wrap your twisted hair into a coil around the band. Use one hand to wrap your hair and another to hold the central part of the coil in place. Tuck the ends of your hair under the knot and secure with a bobby pin. Place another bobby pin on the opposite side of the knot. Two pins works for those with fine hair but if your hair is thick, you'll need to use more.

Now that you've created the perfect knot, finish it off with some hairspray.

The Wave
“With loose waves you can create a tousled casual look or a more glamorous style that has been a timeless trend on catwalks for many years,” Bill said.

Step 1: The Haircut
Get the right haircut. If your cut is too blunt the thick ends will weigh down your curl. To cultivate loose, bouncy waves, I would suggest a long seamless layer cut in long hair.

Step 2: Prep
Prep damp hair with the right styling product for your texture. If you have thick hair, work a smoothing oil like Alterna’s Caviar Polishing Serum from mid-length to ends to control frizz. If you have extremely straight or fine hair, you'll need extra hold to keep waves intact, so comb Alterna Caviar Anti- Aging Mousse from roots to ends. Blow-dry completely, using your fingers to pull hair taut as you direct the dryer's nozzle downward.

Step 3: Creating Waves
Starting around the face, use a 1¼-inch curling iron to create waves in two-inch sections. Twirl the hair away from the face, and keep the iron at a 45-degree angle.

Step 4: Once all of the waves have cooled, gently comb through them with your fingers then finish with Alterna Bamboo root blast which keeps the hair full & tousled and keeps memory when refreshing through the day.
