WAVES INSPIRED BY THE ROARING 1920’S

WAVES INSPIRED BY THE ROARING 1920’S

www.tsiknarishair.com

The Great Gatsby is the talk of the entertainment world following the premiere at Cannes Film Festival earlier this month and the more recent Australian red carpet event. Queensland Hairdresser of the Year 2013, Bill Tsiknaris, and his team from Tsiknaris Hair demonstrate how to create one of the most recognisable styles embraced by the 1920’s flappers, the finger wave.

“The Great Gatsby has created a resurgence of interest in 1920’s style and glamour. Hair of the era featured sharp cheek bone length bobs with blunt fringes and perfectly styled finger waves. We have created a modern adaptation of the finger wave to suit a slightly longer hair style. Hair with fewer layers will work better for this look,” Bill Tsiknaris said.

What you will need:
  • Small curling tong (you can use irons but your look will be a lot looser)
  • Products: Styling tonic, workable hairspray, fixing hairspray
  • Large bristle brush & comb
  • 2 x sectioning clips & a few pin curl clips

Starting on clean dry hair spray the Alterna Styling Tonic (RRP. $32.95) over the hair, moving it about so all the hair is covered.
  • Comb to evenly distribute the product.
  • Part the hair. For this look a more dramatic clean side part gives the best effect.

Starting on the parted side of your head at the base, take a 1 inch section and clip the remaining hair up out of the way.
  • Hold the tong close to the head, winding the hair down and away from the side with less hair on.
  • Repeat this all the way along your 1st section making sure all your curls are curling the same way.
  • Keep repeating this until the whole head is done. Your hair will look like a lot of tight ringlets all curling in the same direction.
  •
    • Spray your whole head with Alterna Working Hair Spray (RRP $38.45). Try and not disturb the curls being very gentle lift them up and place them back down.
    • Leave the curls for 2-5mins.
    • Dressing out the curls: Using your large bristle brush, slowly but firmly start brushing out the hair starting from the ends working your way up the head.
    • At first the hair will become frizzy but the more you brush and work the hair the more control you will get.
    .

You will start to see that classic 1920’s wave.
    • To connect all the hair waves together starting from the top, brush the hair and slowly mould it with the brush, placing the side of your hand in to the hair when you start to see a crease in the hair forming.
    • Holding your hand firm in place start working on your next section below this brushing it firmly to start forming the next part of your wave. It should start to be forming a large ‘s’ shape.

    • Once all the hair is in place spray a light mist of workable hairspray over the back section.
    • The front section is where you get most of your 1920’s style.
    • Like the back of the hair, brush the front and mould it into place so you start to create that finger wave look.

  • Use a few pin curl clips to help the hold the front section in place.
  • Place the clips in the creases of the wave around the face to hold the style.

Once you are happy with the overall look, spray with Alterna Caviar Extra Hold Hairspray (RRP$38.45)
  • Remove pin curl clips after 5 minutes.

DOCTOR URGES INJECTORS: DON’T FEMINISE MEN

DOCTOR URGES INJECTORS: DON’T FEMINISE MEN

From ‘bro-tox’ through to fat freezing, men are seeking cosmetic treatments in record numbers to find new partners, improve their job prospects or keep up with youthful wives.

But renowned Brisbane cosmetic doctor Linda Williams - an international trainer who will address clinicians in Melbourne next week on the topic of male rejuvenation – says we are at risk of losing the “male aesthetic” through incorrectly applied, or overuse of, cosmetic treatments.

“We’re experiencing a boom in men seeking treatments, but we need to ensure that they don’t walk awaywith an immobile appearances and feminine characteristics – like some male celebrities who have ‘raised eyebrows’ over their wrinkle injection use in recent years.

“A good injecting technique retains or enhances male characteristics; think George Clooney’s strong square jawline and low eyebrows.”

Dr Williams will co-host the Master Class on Male Aesthetics next week, outlining her approach to retaining masculinity while reducing signs of environmental damage, stress and ageing.

Dr William’s Artisan Cosmetic and Rejuvenation Clinic in Fortitude Valley has been treating men for 12 years, but its male client base has grown by 31% since 2008.

“Many are in their 40’s and reentering the dating scene after divorce; but most are married men with wives who have taken care of their skin and are ageing well – and the blokes want to keep up,” Dr Williams said.

Dr Williams recently attended the 2013 Asia-Pacific Medical Aesthetics Congress in Manila, which gathered the world’s leading clinicians together, to share the latest injectable approaches to facial aesthetics.

“The central theme was the ‘natural look’; achieving a ‘balance’ between what we can do, and what we should do – it’s the next evolution in cosmetic medicine,” Dr Williams said.
According to a 2012 study by economists Jeff Borland and Andrew Leigh, men with ‘above average’ looks earn 22 per cent more than ‘average’ looking men.
“Guys are using wrinkle injections to remove ‘grumpy old man’ stress lines, create a more healthy appearance and even stop excessive sweating that can cause embarrassment at work,” Dr Williams said.
After decades of using nothing more than the occasional slap of aftershave balm, 40-something Brisbane dad Graham Johnston started Botox, IPL and enzyme skin therapy last year.
“There’s less stigma around men looking after themselves now,” Mr Johnston said.
